Our Process
Our Process
DISCOVERYOur services commence as we work with you to discover the true needs of your organization, your values, and the way your organization functions. Once these are clarified, we move to the next phase, which we call envisioning. At this time, as a team we begin to look outside of the box not only for physical solutions, but also operational solutions as we envision what could be and what should be. If a physical solution is required, we will develop a program that sets the parameters for developing initial creative ideas in graphic form. As these design ideas take form and are further refined, we make sure that you as the client are very involved in the process through a series of interactive work sessions.ENVISIONINGAs we move through the Envisioning/Design phase of our services, we transfer not only sketches on paper, but move quickly into computer modeling and 3-D visualization. During our work sessions with the client, we use these interactive tools to communicate these ideas effectively. We can modify our designs on the fly during these client meetings and immediately view the changes on-screen. This accelerates and streamlines the whole design and decision-making process beyond the traditional time-consuming "client meeting---back to the boards---reprint---client meeting" cyclical process. BLUEPRINTING/DOCUMENTATIONWe then move into the "blueprinting" phase, where specific materials, systems, and technology are considered and applied to the design. Modern blueprints have evolved and now refer to the documents prepared by architects and engineers that fully describe the design intent for the contractors and suppliers. These documents are now prepared using computer-aided design tools. At MOEN Architecture+, we have been using Autodesk® Revit® building information modeling software since our inception in 2001. Our virtual building models allow us to depict, test, integrate, and coordinate all of the building systems in a single model. This information is then communicated to the contractor with drawings (views of the model), schedules, and written material specifications. During this phase, we also lead the client through a decision-making process where the effectiveness of the proposed design is tested against the desired outcome and cost ramifications.IMPLEMENTATIONFinally, we move into the most rewarding, but challenging phase of our process. During the construction phase, the design is transformed from a virtual reality into a living and breathing entity, where a much larger team joins together to build the physical solution, taking into account cost, schedule, logistics, and quality. Teamwork, organization, and strong communication are key ingredients at this stage. We promote the use of sophisticated technology and communication systems along with qualified construction professionals to ensure that your investment of time and money successfully achieves your vision and goals.

Cornerstone LB
This young, growing church in need of a permanent home acquired a former 40,000 s.f. office building for their new facility. The church placed great emphasis on fellowship and ministry involvement, but when the new property had minimal outdoor congregating space, this design provided an indoor courtyard that acts as a spine to connect the major assembly spaces with the building entrances. By stretching out the lobby, it encourages personal encounters and exposure to the different ministry booths that line the pathway. The courtyard design incorporates the use of banners and fabric screens that add color and life to the spaces along with an internal coffee bar. The sanctuary is designed as a multi-function assembly space that can accommodate a variety of venues and seating arrangements. MOEN Architecture+ also provided a 3D virtual building tour to the church to aid in fundraising.

Artesian Well
Artesian Well Church LONG BEACH, CA
This vibrant multi-cultural church acquired a former 24,000 s.f. warehouse for their new facility. With a very economical retrofit and improvements, their new facility houses a 500 seat sanctuary, 200 seat dining/fellowship hall, and a large indoor mall and bistro area, along with classrooms, video production facilities and upstairs offices. The phased build-out of the facility will also include a dance studio and full-service nursery and children's ministry areas.
First Pres Downey
First Presbyterian Church DOWNEY, CA
Surrounded by a community that has undergone a radical change in demographics, this once booming church congregation desires to reach out and attract younger generations. The architectural challenge was to reconfigure the sanctuary to accommodate new worship venues and functions while restoring the historic features of the sanctuary, which was built in the early 1930’s. MOEN Architecture+ researched the original architecture that had been compromised through the years. The design restores and enhances the original architectural character. New lighting is incorporated into the design along with a new flexible chancel area and new storage areas for instruments and furniture. New audio-visual elements were carefully added without intruding on the traditional architecture.
Irvine Baptist
The Irvine Baptist Church renovation project involved a complete interior renovation, encompassing the sanctuary, foyer, and balcony of a substandard and outdated Worship Center, along with ADA upgrades. The intent was to accommodate and attract new, younger worshipers to the growing Korean congregation. The chancel/stage area was enlarged and remodeled to provide greater flexibility for music, drama, and speaking events. The sanctuary pews were removed and replaced with new flexible seating, and the balcony was rebuilt to improve site-lines and incorporate a new recessed sound control booth. A new house lighting system, stage lighting, and audio-visual technology were installed to accommodate new high-tech worship services. All of the interior surfaces were replaced and refinished in order to provide a new, fresh look. With the careful selection of new translucent window shading devices, the existing stained glass windows are now exposed to view while allowing shade control sufficient for stage lighting and projection. The existing Worship Center entry lobby was also renovated with rich interior finishes, including granite floors and maple wood accents.

Los Altos GBC
Los Altos Brethren Church LONG BEACH, CA
This renovation project in Long Beach, California involved a complete exterior renovation to an aging church and school facility. Faced with a tight budget and a desire to improve the image and durability of the building exterior, MOEN Architecture+ enhanced the existing 50’s style modern architecture by using inexpensive materials and softening the straight lines of the building with simple curved hardscape elements. Exterior lighting was redesigned to accentuate the architecture. The redesigned courtyard and exterior spaces now provide a great environment for congregants and students to interact. Internal design modifications include reconfiguration of the sanctuary to accommodate new worship service configurations.
St Jane Frances
St. Frances De Chantal Church NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA
To embrace the new emphasis on participation in masses and observance of the sacraments, this thriving church in North Hollywood, California desired to modify their sanctuary to accommodate a new seating arrangement which would further unify the congregation. Lee Resid
The Lee Residence in Rancho Palos Verdes, California is perched on a property above the Pacific Ocean that offers expansive ocean views. The intent of this project was to upgrade the existing 1950’s post and beam tract home to better capture and orient its spaces toward the ocean and to fully emulate the owner’s fondness for modern architecture. To create a new statement and orientation toward the ocean, the center section of the existing gabled structure was cut out and replaced with new construction covered by a large curved roof enclosed with expansive glass windows on both ends. This new open plan and transparent living space opens up views to the ocean from the street and entryway past a new dramatic swimming pool and deck. The design utilizes extensive water features including a reflecting pool on the street side of the house, tiled wall fountains, and custom swimming pool fountains. The main entry features a custom stainless steel clad door and the curved roof is clad with standing seam on the outside and custom milled hardwood on the inside. The main living area opens to the pool deck and view via a fully-retractable glass wall that slides into hidden pockets.
